Title:
Reference to article on math stereotyping damage
Summary:
www-news.uchicago.edu/releases/07/070524.beilock.shtml

A popular stereotype that boys are better at mathematics than girls undermines girls’ math performance because it causes worrying that erodes the mental resources needed for problem solving, new research at the University of Chicago shows.

The scholars found that the worrying undermines women’s working memory. Working memory is a short-term memory system involved in the control, regulation and active maintenance of limited information needed immediately to deal with problems at hand.
The Issue:
The issue I have with this is -- why wasn`t a similar study done on boys` supposed lack of verbal ability and supposed lack of ability to multitask, collaborate well with others, and creatively integrate disparate information?

The impression that is created by this study is that it is the girls who are the disabled ones, either by their own impressionability or their own lack of self belief.

i agree with you that studies should have been done on both sides of the stereotype, but i think this study could also be helpful in both refuting the idea that women are naturally bad at math, and re-enforcing the need to stop perpetuating the stereotype.
